SYMPOSIUM is a student-led club at Columbia and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cross-cultural dialogues.
Symposium was founded in 2013 by two Columbia alumni who wanted to bring Core Curriculum style seminars to students in Asia with limited access to humanities education. Symposium's seminars were originally modeled after Literature Humanities, one of the central pillars of the Core Curriculum of Columbia University. The project aimed to cultivate critical thinking skills in an interactive seminar context.
In 2014, Symposium partnered with UCAME (Columbia University Committee on Asia and Middle East) to expand the scope of our global conversation. Our seminars are now focused primarily on a comparative mode of discussing texts in order to foster interculturation and global-minded sensibilities.
In 2015, we were officially recognized as a student club at Columbia under SGB and have been moving forward with this new platform.
Over the past couple of years, we have provided free opportunities for high school and college students all around the world to experience humanities-based seminars. Our programs have been carried out in New York City, China, Japan, Thailand, India and Singapore.
